A Senate investigation revealed that FDA officials deliberately silenced their own safety expert who detected severe adverse events linked to COVID vaccines, including cardiac deaths and strokes, just three months after vaccine rollout began in 2021.
Safety Expert Ordered to Stop Analysis
Dr. Ana Szarfman, an FDA safety analyst, warned on March 1, 2021 that the agency’s standard monitoring system was hiding critical vaccine safety signals through a flaw called “masking.” When she applied an improved statistical method, it detected 49 examples of extreme masking involving serious conditions like sudden cardiac death, Bell’s palsy, cardiac failure, and cerebral artery occlusion. The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System showed more adverse events from COVID vaccines than all other vaccines combined over its 30-year history. The COVID vaccine proved 55 times more deadly than the flu vaccine, with 25.5 deaths per million doses compared to 0.46 deaths for flu shots.
FDA Leadership Silenced the Warning
Dr. Peter Marks, the FDA’s top vaccine official, shut down Dr. Szarfman’s analysis in September 2021. He told FDA leadership that her work had become a “major distraction” and could “create erroneous conflicts that feed into anti-vaccination rhetoric.” Internal emails show officials ordered her to stop conducting data analyses and told her not to share findings externally. Senator Ron Johnson stated health officials didn’t ignore safety signals—they actively buried them to avoid stoking vaccine hesitancy, even as Americans continued receiving the shots.
